Professional background: Petteri Vihervaara (PhD) is working at the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke)

Research focus: biodiversity monitoring for sustainability. Petteri Vihervaara has studied the use of Earth observations for biodiversity and ecosystem assessments as well as development of indicators for measuring state and trends of biodiversity and ecosystem services. He has been keen on holistic management of sustainability of the coupled human-environment systems.

Key engagements: Petteri Vihervaara has long-term experience on international research networks such as GEO BON (the Group on Earth Observations – Biodiversity Observation Network) and the working groups of the European Commission. Currently, he leads European Biodiversity Partnership’s (Biodiversa+) WP2 which aims at establishing a transnational network of (sub-)national biodiversity monitoring schemes and increasing of the use of biodiversity data across the society in Europe.
